Powys joined Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire and Swansea Councils in receiving grant funding for the electric charging points.
The money comes from The Energy Saving Trust (EST) which is administering the fund on behalf of the UK Government's Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) to install electric vehicle charge points in car parks in residential areas.
The funding aims to increase the availability of affordable and accessible charging options, which will be key to increasing the uptake of plug-in-vehicles in the UK.
Before moving over to the education portfolio, Cllr Phyl Davies (Conservative, Blaen Hafren) the former Highways, Recycling and Assets portfolio holder, said: "We are delighted to have been given the full amount available to help us kick start our journey towards future proofing our county and reducing carbon emissions.
"The funding given will allow us to install charging points in nine of our car parks.
"It signals the start of our Phase I programme which will see us begin to build up a network of charging points across the county and we'll be looking to lever in more funding to increase our provision going forward."
UK Government's Welsh Secretary, Alun Cairns MP, added: "It is vital that electric vehicle drivers feel confident about the availability of charge points near their homes and along their journeys.
"Greater availability of charge points will also encourage a shift towards greener transport, bringing significant environmental benefits with it.
"I would encourage more councils to apply in order to create the necessary infrastructure to help us reach our net zero emissions target."
The nine car parks chosen for the Phase I installation are:
· High Street car park, Llandrindod Wells, LD1 6BG
· The Groe car park, Builth Wells, LD2 3BL
· Mount Street car park, Llanidloes, SY18 6BZ
